Background
According to the 2010 Global Hunger Index, Pakistan out of 84 countries ranks 52nd in the world and despite substantial advances in maternal and child mortality reduction, under-nutrition amongst children remains a significant problem here. Nearly 50 out of a 1,000 children under the age of five die from conditions related to hidden hunger and 33 per cent in Karachi – as opposed to 15 per cent in Industrialised nations – are iron-deficient. To address these alarming statistics the Aman Foundation launched AMANGHAR, a pilot programme that provides nutritionally balanced meals to schools in Khuda ki Basti, an economically challenged suburb in Karachi.
